How to identify bed bugs?

Adult Bed Bug

An adult female bed bug can lay 1-3 eggs per day and 200-500 eggs per her lifetime. However, this bug needs a male bed bug to reproduce. It lives between 99 and 300 days.

Appearance
About the size of an apple seed, 5-7 mm long.
Long and brown, with a flat, oval-shaped body if not fed recently.
Balloon-like, reddish-brown, and more elongated if fed recently.
Distinct smell, with a musty-sweetish odor produced through glands on the lower side of the body.

Cast Skins
Bed bugs will shed their skin five times before becoming an adult throughout their life cycle. It will be of various sizes and look like clear, empty exoskeletons. Cast skins are more likely to be found around nesting areas than out in the open. You can find them in box springs, mattress seams, wood framing, inside books, picture frames, nightstands, carpet, and other items around their hiding spots.

Bed Bug Eggs
After mating, females lay sticky, white, oval-shaped eggs into cracks and crevices. Bed bug eggs look like tiny grains of rice or 2 grains of salt put together. They are shiny translucent to pearly white in color and found in bed bug harborages and locations away from people. Bed bug eggs are approximately 1/16″ long and usually can be found on wood and fabric than on plastic or metal. Bed bug eggs hatch in about 10 to 14 days, and the newly emerged bed bug nymphs instinctively seek out a blood meal.

Bed Bug Nymph
Bed bug nymphs are much smaller than adult bed bugs. Nymphs are approximately 1/16" when they first hatch and are nearly colorless until their first feeding. Because of their relatively small size and translucent appearance, they can be challenging to see. However, they can be seen and are easier to spot when they are on the move. Several nymphs are signs of an impending infestation. The heat treatment of the area is required to prevent spreading them to other places.

Fecal Marks
Fecal marks are blood stains resulting from a bed bug bite. It can be visible on lighter-colored sheets and pillowcases, furniture, clothes, and even walls. The stains are typically dark or rusty spots of excrement.
Unlike blood stains, fecal spotting tends to be black or dark in color. They are from partially digested blood and usually clustered in groups around areas that bed bugs inhabit. The spots will smear if sprayed with liquid or wiped with a wet rag. Evidence of fecal spotting is usually visible in their typical hideouts, such as mattress seams and edges and corners of boxsprings.
